Journey Begins :)
I chose the Art, Community and Culture Capstone class because I wanted to create work that would link to my community, celebrating the culture and memories of my home country, Taiwan. I also wanted to use this opportunity to let every other international student know that homesickness is something I've been through as well, and that we're all in this together. But I wasn’t sure how to pull all this together and express what I was thinking. I spent the first few months of this class brainstorming different ideas, before finally deciding on what I wanted to do.
I wanted to create a large map of Taiwan filled with all the things that I missed and that were part of me.
On the Way :)
I had decided that I wanted to create a large map of Taiwan spread over three canvases, and use the fluid art to create the ocean background, which is when you mix fluid medium and paints together and pour it onto the artwork
The elements that I included on the canvas are festivals celebrated every year in my family, food and drinks that I have the most memories with, and famous Taiwanese cultural sites. As I painted each element into the map, and surrounded it with the fluid blue ocean, I remembered my home. I hadn’t quite finished my paintings by Spring Break, so I asked my teacher to help me take them off the stretcher bars so I could finish them at home while on Spring Break. I was excited for the final exhibition of this work!
Changes :(
Well things changed, due to the virus, we are currently having classes online. The final project was supposed to be presented personally in a group art exhibition! Our teacher asked us to rescope our project and think of a new way to present our work. I decided to create a website to show my work and to be able to explain it. What I found is that it actually makes it easier to talk about and more interactive as i can share links to my country. I also learned to build a website, which I know for sure it will help me a lot in the future!
The Next Step :)
Because of this project, I started to think about and be grateful for my Taiwanese culture. I am home during this time of the pandemic, and I have become more appreciative of spending time with friends and family. My hope is that my project will let more people get to know this small island in Asia and to encourage our global community to come together and accept each other.
